In the lead up to the King’s Coronation we spoke to two of our residents at Old Shenfield Place and asked them what they are most looking forward to.

Joan Cushen:

I always look forward to the atmosphere when there are royal celebrations, I remember when it was the Queen’s Coronation and we sat around my aunt’s little black and white television screen eating homemade cakes.

I have always had an interest in the royal family, I have a cup and saucer from the Queen’s Coronation and my daughter and myself made a scrapbook of Princess Anne. She was always so beautiful and glamorous. I am sure the King will look smart for his Coronation too but I doubt I will create a scrapbook for him, I will just enjoy watching it on our big television at the home and enjoying all the food and drink.

I remember when the King was born, it was the same year as my sister, it was wonderful news that Elizabeth welcomed her first child, but at this point in time we didn’t think she or he would be King as they weren’t in line.

Joyce Atkins:

I remember the Queen’s Coronation, my family and myself went the night before to try and get a glimpse. I didn’t see much but I could say we were there. The atmosphere was terrific, you couldn’t hear anything because of the cheering – I wasn’t deaf then!

There were a lot of military soldiers and the Navy and Airforce. We had a lovely little street party afterwards. The parties were filled with lots of children. It was something we were never likely to do again. I have never seen the crown jewels, but I would love to see them. I have mugs at home: a Queen Victoria mug, and a King Edward mug, they were only cheap and cheerful ones, but they were lovely.

I can’t remember King Charles being born, but I hope the weekend goes well and I’m sure he will be a great King. I am looking forward to the King’s Coronation, it’s something really lovely to see. Prince Charles was a handsome boy! My Favourite part was seeing the golden coach, it was so beautiful. I wish I knew more about the heritage of the shields and the emblems. I am most looking forward to watching it and the atmosphere! I wish I was able to be there again.

At Old Shenfield, residents will get together to watch the Coronation and after lunch residents will be treated to a selection of tea and cakes to watch the procession on our big TV screens.
