Mother’s Day is approaching and it is a day to celebrate the most amazing woman in our lives, who has loved, nurtured, and cared for us all her life.

It is a special day for all, but can be challenging to make it special when your mother is living in a care home. However, you can still find ways to make this Mother’s Day special and memorable for your mum.

Here are a few ways in which you can make this Mother’s Day special:

Arrange a visit with your family

If you can, get the family together and arrange a visit to the care home on Mother’s Day. Spending some quality in-person time can be one of the best ways to celebrate this special day.

You can bring along her favourite snacks and treats and spend the day catching up and reminiscing about good old times.

Before you plan your visit, be sure to check with the care home about visiting hours and any health and safety protocols they may have in place for the safety of the residents.

Organise a video call

If you can’t celebrate with your mum in-person, you can try organising a video call with your mum and other family members. This is a safer and easier way to still spend quality time with your mum, even if you are away. You could also watch her favourite movie or TV show together.

Care home workers are always happy to help with arranging such calls to make the resident’s day better.

Participate in an activity together

At Old Shenfield Place, we have lots of activities planned for Mother’s Day, such as arts and crafts and games. You can join in these activities and make it a special experience for your mum.

Our activities coordinator, Julie, will be bringing the entertainment and will be singing at 2pm on Sunday for an hour. Our ladies will enjoy a glass of fizz and will receive a homemade Mother’s Day card.

Treat your mum

Our mums have given us so much over the years, and it is now time to return the favour. You can send your mum a lovely bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, or even a personalised gift such as a photo album, or scrapbook of all the memories you have shared with her.

Your mum will love this lovely surprise and cherish the gifts forever.

Bring her home for a day

If you can, bring your mum home for a day and spend the day doing all your favourite activities together. You could cook or bake together, enjoy a nice homemade meal or watch movies together. She will surely love being back with the family and it will be a memorable day.

There are many ways in which you can make this Mother’s Day one to remember. Just remember to plan ahead and incorporate your mum’s favourite things and some quality time, and you are all set to make new memories with your mum.
