Mayor Opens New Seaside Oasis - Old Shenfield Place

Old Shenfield Place Care Home welcomed the Mayor, Gareth Barrett, as he marked the official opening of our new seaside area with a ribbon cutting ceremony. We also hosted a celebration party on Saturday 16th September bringing together the community to enjoy a fun-filled event.

While a trip to the local beach isn’t possible for all, we created their very own seaside oasis for residents to enjoy in the comfort of their own home. It was a trip down memory lane for many, as residents reminisced about their most memorable seaside family holidays while they took part in some traditional beachside activities, including, a beach-styled sandpit, an ice cream van, a bouncy castle and live music.

Not only was the event a huge success, but we also raised £475 for the resident’s fund where we are planning to treat the residents to something extraordinary once they reach £1,000.

This day was particularly special for one of Old Shenfield’s residents, Maureen Banville, 84, who informed her daughter that she had a lovely day.

Cllr Gareth Barrett, Mayor of Brentwood, said: “I was delighted to be invited to join Old Shenfield Place care home to open their new seaside garden. Their summer party brought together families of all generations and it was great to see so many smiling faces and hear memories shared. It was a pleasure to be part of their celebration.”

Cristina Duran, home manager at Old Shenfield Place, said: “The day was a great success. It was fantastic to see our residents reminiscing and enjoying the sensory and traditional pleasures of a visit to the seaside. We are so excited to be able to open our brand new seaside area. We are confident it will make a huge difference to our residents as it provides an escape and a unique experience.”

She continued: “It was a pleasure to welcome the Mayor, Gareth Barrett to officially open the seaside oasis. Our residents love a party, and love engagement from the outside world. The joy on the residents’ faces was a testament to the success of the event and I’d like to thank my team for all their dedication to making it such a wonderful day.”

The new seaside area has now been fully installed with a beach-style sandpit in a seaside and underwater theme. It features a beach bar, deckchairs and straw style umbrellas to decorate the picnic benches.

Stimulating all of the senses is a vital part of a resident’s care, particularly those living with dementia, which is why the seaside oasis is such a valuable asset to the care home.

At Old Shenfield Place, we continue to prioritise the well-being and happiness of their residents. The creation of the new seaside area has created an environment that fosters joy and cherished memories.
